Determine if your employee has needs outside of work that you might be able to assist in meeting them.
Set perimeters where the employee can take care of the personal life issues and still maintain a good work life balance.
EMOTIONS
Work life balance is important, therefore be sensitive to the employee. If you value their work then you need to find a balance.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Make the employee accountable for their work but allow freedom for them to address their personal life issues.
*Remember just because your employee has a lot going on in their personal life doesn't make them a bad employee. Often employees that have a lot going on outside work are volunteering their time or going to school. Learn how to harness this desire for your employee to be involved and work together with the employee to work through the issues. You may find that your employee will be more productive if you can properly address this issue.
